Proposed

Which typefaces does AKRIBIS use, and do all ten brands share them?

Specification

  1. Two families for the ten brands: IBM Plex Sans for text, headings, interface and data; IBM Plex Mono for code, identifiers, file names and small uppercase labels. No unit has a typeface of its own: its identity is in the wordmark and the colour.
  2. Web: files of our own under Brand's /fonts/, generated on every build from IBM's packages at pinned versions: Plex Sans variable (roman and italic, weight axis 300–700, width fixed at 100) and Plex Mono 400 and 500. Subset by rule: Latin, Latin Extended-A, Greek, typographic punctuation and technical symbols; fonts.json lists every declared character the font lacks. A site links /tokens/type.css after base.css and styles with the roles; no site loads Google Fonts or another copy.
  3. Weights: Regular 400 for text; Medium 500 for interface (labels, buttons, table headers, emphasis at small sizes); SemiBold 600 for headings and strong; Bold 700 for display. Light 300 travels in the file without a job.
  4. Scale in rem: base 1; upward a major third (1.25): 1.25 · 1.5625 · 1.9531 · 2.4414 · 3.0518; downward 2 px a step: 0.875 and 0.75, and nothing smaller. Steps 3 to 5 are fluid: one step smaller on a 20 rem viewport, nominal from 80 rem. A site invents no sizes: it uses the steps (--size-N).
  5. Line height per step: 1.5 for text (steps −2 to 0), then 1.4 · 1.3 · 1.2 · 1.15 · 1.1. Measure: 68ch, 45ch in narrow columns. Tracking: none at text sizes; −0.01em from step 3; +0.06em on uppercase labels.
  6. Figures: lining and tabular by default in Plex (every digit is 0.6 em in the Sans), so columns align with nothing set; slashed zero (font-variant-numeric: slashed-zero) in codes and serials where 0 and O meet. Fractions, superscripts and subscripts through the OpenType features the subset keeps (frac, sups, subs).
  7. Roles, with font: var(--type-…): display, title, heading, subheading, lede, body, small, caption, label (mono, medium, uppercase), code and data (tabular). The same roles travel in tokens.json as DTCG typography tokens.
  8. Fit with the wordmarks (measured on every build): at the same x-height, Plex Sans Medium's stem matches the mark's within 6 % and SemiBold weighs 9 % more; the constructions differ on purpose. A mark aligns with text by x-height (--font-sans-x-height: 0.516 of the font size). A unit's name is never set in Plex instead of its wordmark (2.3).
  9. Office and print: the complete static instances as TTF (Sans Regular, Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, SemiBold, SemiBold Italic, Bold, Bold Italic; Mono Regular, Medium) in a versioned zip with the licences, to install for all users. The Office templates (4.1) use the same weights for the same jobs.
  10. Licence: SIL Open Font License 1.1 for both families: no per-seat cost, for every unit, site and document.

To re-reason

  • Metric fallbacks (size-adjust, ascent-override) so text does not jump while the font loads.
  • Whether Plex wants a lighter weight in dark mode, where light text on a dark ground reads heavier.
  • Other scripts (full Greek, Cyrillic) if a unit needs them; today Mono's Greek falls back to the system.
  • A serif for long documents (certificates, reports): none today, and the Sans covers them.

Evidence to audit

  • brand/type.yaml · brand/src/type.ts, font.ts · public/fonts/fonts.json (faces, coverage, axes, features, metrics, the fit numbers)
  • brand/evidence/type-fit.png, brand/evidence/type-specimen.png (brand/src/study-type.ts, set in the static instances 3.005)
  • npm @ibm/plex-sans-variable@0.2.0, @ibm/plex-mono@2.5.0, @ibm/plex-sans@1.1.0 · SIL Open Font License 1.1
  • AKRIBIS-Group/design@main · brand/decisions/07-typography.md (Plex over Inter, Geist and Public Sans; a scale that claimed a major third and did not follow it)
  • Five font stacks across the sites: Inter + Manrope, IBM Plex + Fraunces, IBM Plex, Source Serif + Source Sans, Archivo + JetBrains Mono
  • Branding/akribis-one-lockup/ (the delivered lockup set «one» in Plex Sans Light; ADR-0011 moved it to the glyph library, so no mark depends on a typeface)

Delivers

  • One WOFF2 per face (variable Sans roman and italic
  • Mono 400 and 500)
  • type.css with fonts
  • scale and roles
  • the typography tokens in tokens.json
  • and the font package for Office and print.

The fit test (ADR-0020): the AKRIBIS wordmark beside "akribis" in IBM Plex Sans at the same x-height, one row per weight. The mark's stem is 0.263 of its x-height; the closest is Plex Sans Medium's i, within 6 %: the interface weight weighs like the mark, and SemiBold headings 9 % more. The constructions differ on purpose: text does not imitate the mark.
